A Bear Walks Into an Art Gallery…

The latest Gallery1988 show is called Off The Leash and it celebrates all of our favorite non-human characters in pop culture. Scooby Doo, Kermit the Frog, Wilbur the Pig, Chewbacca, Cujo, Rocket Raccoon, and more. A great theme and a perfect fit for a piece Michelle and I have been wanting to do for a while: Fozzie Bear, up on stage at a show, absolutely killing it.

“Say! What has a thousand legs but can’t walk?”

One of the reasons I wanted to do this particular piece is because I know from experience that Michelle can sculpt a Fozzie Bear out of wool that is absolutely spot on. She did it before for our Muppets diorama, and she did it again this time. So yeah, she performed most of the heavy lifting on this piece and, to be frank, she killed it.

“Five-hundred pairs of pants! Wocka Wocka!”

So, you might ask, what was my part in all of this? I guess…everything else. The base. The props. And learning to use some new tools and materials that will, with any hope, help streamline our process here in the workshop and, better, allow us to do some things we couldn’t before.

Full disclosure: I did not make that chicken. He came pre-cooked.

If you’re a fan of pop-culture creatures on any level, you should check out Gallery1988’s show, Off The Leash. And if you’re a fan of two unapologetic Muppet nerds making art in their basement workshop, you can watch our process video below.
