Journey with Ichabod Crane through this Sleepy Hollow Poster

Ichabod Crane, the itinerant schoolmaster who ran afoul of the Headless Horseman, is journeying once again through the Hudson Valley. And now that I’ve finally finished my latest passion project, you can join him as he ventures into and through Sleepy Hollow in my new story poster.

This project has nestled in the bottom of my duffel for years. There were always more pressing things to take care of. But this past summer I thought, odds bodkins! If I don’t do this now I may never do it! So I carved out some time to start illustrating this story.

Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has always thrilled me. And I’ve always thought it would be fun to illustrate the story. But I wanted to do it a little differently. So I mapped out the narrative, picked the scenes I wanted to illustrate, and compiled them all in one flowing poster-sized image.

The concept was that the poster would exist as a piece of art, but also as an illustrated story for viewers, or a guide for storytellers to use as they spun the tale on Halloween, or even just a fun way to introduce Ichabod Crane to grade school kids and maybe get them interested in reading the book.

Most of the well-remembered story beats are represented in the poster. The trick was putting in as many as I could, but not so many that they’d have to be rendered as tiny, hard-to-see, micro-drawings.

Get The Poster

Taking into consideration how the art would look at print size, we decided 18”x24” posters would be perfect to showcase the story. We had a small run printed up and you can pick one up in my shop here at this link.

Hear The Story Come To Life

Michelle and I welcomed a special guest to our video for the poster on YouTube this week. Right around the three-and-a-half minute mark, voice actor Owen McCuen provides narration and sound effects for a quick, four-minute version of Sleepy Hollow as the illustrations from the poster move across the screen. It’s a really Reading Rainbow kind of experience that you don’t wanna miss. Here’s the link to the video below:
