Progress Report: When I started The Great Comic Experiment, it was with the idea that putting up Untold Tales of Bigfoot for a live audience — writing and drawing under the pressure of a deadline and feedback –would somehow make me better and/or faster at telling stories and creating comics. Happy to report that, not only am I improving in the speed department, but that the feedback and comments I’ve been getting are really helping me visualize possible opportunities and potential pitfalls in the storyline. So, though it might’ve been more comfortable creating UTOB in a vacuum, putting it up week after week as it’s written has made it a better comic. So thanks to everybody for helping out with that.

Giveaway Update: This past weekend I ran the random drawing for the sketch card giveaway and I’m happy to congratulate Wouter who lives in the Netherlands. The card’s all packed up and I’ll ship it out to Wouter this week. It’ll be a nice test of the international postal system. As always, thanks for reading the comic and commenting.
fan art for Sometime After by Vince DorseFinally, as you can tell from this cropped image above, I participated in another fan-art exchange this week! This time it was with Ryan Fisher, creator of the webcomic, Sometime After. Ryan was kind enough to send me this emotionally charged image of Bigfoot and Scout, rowing down some unnamed river in their quest to find Scout’s home. I love the way Ryan captured the essence of their personalities with the expressions on their faces. There’s a charming, storybook feel to Ryan’s illustration and it’s what makes his own webcomic so endearing. Sometime After, done in greytones with traditional pen/ink/brush techniques, examines what happens to storybook/fairy tale characters when they’ve outlived their relevance. It’s not strictly all-ages, but use some parental guidance and head over to check out Sometime After. The characters are instantly likeable, the storylines have real heart and Ryan’s always posting something interesting on his accompanying blog. And while you’re there. take a gander at the fan art I did for Ryan! -v

Thanks for stopping by. I’d love to hear what you think of the comic. Just remember, Untold Tales of Bigfoot is for grown-ups and kids. So let’s keep the comments appropriate.

  1. He spoke (a word)! He spoke! What else does he know?

    • Yes, Jonquil, he spoke! And though he’s a beast of few words, today’s utterance is new! So yes, you’re wise to wonder what else he knows. We’ll be peeling back layer after layer of Bigfoot’s backstory soon. He’s like an onion. A big, hairy onion. Thanks for reading! -v

    • Yeah, Jeff, he’s got good hands. He’d be murder on a basketball court. And thus ends the portion of the comment where I pretend to know anything about professional sports. Thanks for stopping by, Jeff! -v

  2. Watch out, Scout. That first step is a doooozie! I’m glad Bigfoot has super fast reflexes.
Another great piece of fan art! Ryan did a great job with their expressions.

    • I’m just going to go ahead and assume that’s a Groundhog Day reference, Needlenose Ned. And yeah, it IS a da-hoooozie!
Ryan’s fan art is great stuff. I work digitally so it’s really nice to see that natural media brushwork applied to Bigfoot and Scout. Thanks for the comment! -v

  3. I can’t wait to see where this goes! Also a surprise that Bigfoot can speak!

    • I’ve gotten a few comments this week that expressed surprise that Bigfoot can speak. Though it may have been a while, you’ll recall Bigfoot has spoken a few words before — friend, bigfoot, lonely, etc. I think the reason this week’s “NO!” is so striking is that, while his earlier utterances could possibly be written off as parroting, his “NO!” clearly indicates understanding and communication. So, yeah, I guess it’s kind of striking.

As for where it’s all going, so far we’ve gotten a good bit of Scout’s backstory, but Bigfoot has remained, as in real life, sort of a mystery. But trust me when I say that soon you’ll find out a little more about the big guy. Thanks for commenting, Michael! -v

  4. Thank gosh his hands are big like his feet! Excellent job on the woodland textures and color, Vince.

Ryan did a fun job catching Bigfoot and Scout, I especially love the expressions! Some great line work going on, too! Really fun, Ryan!

    • Yeah, quick hands are an asset in the wild. Thanks for noticing the textures. I had a blast working on that fallen tree.

And yeah, Ryan did a great job portraying the emotions in his fan art. Love that natural media stuff! Thanks for stopping by, Mark. -v

  5. I like the look on Scout’s face in the last panel. :)

    • : ) I had someone email me with that same comment! Yeah, Scout’s got his eye on something. So far he’s not sure whether or not he likes what he sees. Thanks for reading, Cheryl! -v

  6. Way to save the day, Bigfoot! Man, Vince, I had to spend five minutes just staring at your incredible artwork before I could tear myself away to post a comment.

    • Heck, George, that’s awfully nice of you to say. Thank you. I’ll tell you…drawing the comic is the easy part. Chasing Bigfoot and Scout through the woods with my sketchbook to get my references drawings is a backbreaker! Thanks for stopping. -v

  7. Perfect facial expressions, Scout is a real little charmer! Big chuckle on his comment about why would anyone put that there when dangling over the chasm. Beautiful work, Vince!

    • Thanks, Anni! Glad to have you stop by! Yes, Scout seems to be running away with the show here. Very popular character. Glad I added him into the script. Thanks for reading. -v
